West Yorkshire: It’s been a rough time for bus riders lately. Arriva’s service cuts have really stirred up frustration among commuters. The Mayor of West Yorkshire, Tracy Brabin, has called these cuts “appalling,” and it’s hard to disagree when you hear the stories coming out of the area.

People have been dealing with unreliable bus services for a while now. Jobs are at risk, and the driver shortage is making things worse. Just this month, Arriva slashed several routes, leaving many without reliable transport.

Arriva claims they’ve hired over 300 new drivers since the start of the year, but they still had to make these cuts to improve service. It’s a tough situation, and Kim Cain, the Area Director, has apologized for the mess, saying they’re determined to fix it.

Take Connor from Cleckheaton, for example. His job in Huddersfield is hanging by a thread because he can’t rely on the buses. He’s had to chat with his boss about being late, which is frustrating when it’s not his fault. He’s even been forced to take taxis almost every day, which is a real pain.

His sister, Sophie, has had her own struggles. She’s felt unsafe waiting for buses that just don’t show up, leaving her stranded at night. In just two weeks, she faced four cancellations, which cost her a hefty £48 in taxi fares.

Despite efforts from the West Yorkshire Combined Authority to train new drivers, only a few have ended up working for Arriva. The Mayor pointed out that they’ve even had to step in to save some routes, like the 212 between Dewsbury and Wakefield, which is now being run by Yorkshire Buses.

Mayor Brabin is doing her best to support passengers and find alternative options. She believes bringing buses back under public control is the right move, ensuring profits go back into the community instead of lining shareholders’ pockets.

Arriva has acknowledged the issues, saying they’re trying to match their timetable with the number of drivers available. They’ve faced challenges, especially with bad weather affecting their Wakefield depot. They’re working hard to bring in extra help to get things back on track.

It’s a tough time for everyone involved, and the hope is that things will improve soon. Stay tuned for updates as Arriva works to resolve these issues.
