Glasgow: Big changes are on the horizon for Charing Cross. Plans have been approved to shake things up in this part of the city. The area has been pretty much a mess since the M8 came through in the 1960s, tearing down buildings and leaving a chaotic landscape.

Now, there’s a new project called Charing Cross Gateway, or CXG for short. It’s going to replace some old buildings with modern ones, including a 23-storey tower and loads of student flats. They’re even talking about creating green spaces and maybe some shops and restaurants.

But it’s not all smooth sailing. The Baby Grand, a beloved local spot, is closing its doors to make way for the new student housing. The developers say Charing Cross needs a fresh identity and a better vibe, which is why they’re pushing for these changes.

They want to get rid of the M8 office plinth, which they describe as “iconic but commercially awkward.” Plus, there’s a plan for a park over the M8 to help cut down on noise and pollution. Sounds like a win-win, right?

Construction is already buzzing in the area, with new projects popping up everywhere. But before any of this can kick off, the developers have to jump through a few more hoops, like submitting detailed plans and making sure the M8 stays safe during all the work.

With so many students in Glasgow, there’s a real need for more accommodation. The University of Glasgow has even warned that they might not have enough beds for everyone next year. So, this new project could really help out.
