Dorset: Recent storms caused flooding and transport issues. More heavy rain is expected this winter.

The fire service has shared important safety tips for residents. They want everyone to be prepared for possible flooding.

A spokesperson said, “Have a plan ready if flooding occurs. Keep a list of important numbers, like your local council and insurance company.”

They recommend checking Floodline at 0345 988 1188 or visiting the government’s flood warning website for updates.

If you live near a river, know your rights and responsibilities. Get sandbags to block doors and airbricks. You can buy them or make your own with old bags filled with sand.

Keep surface water drains clear to help water drain away faster. It’s also a good idea to create a flood kit.

Your kit should include a torch, a battery or wind-up radio, necessary medications, emergency contacts, rubber gloves, and insurance policies. Store it safely, ideally upstairs.

In case of flooding, know how to turn off your gas, electricity, and water. Check with your insurance company to ensure you have adequate flood coverage.
