Thurso: A young mum named Nicole is really struggling with her living situation. She’s pregnant and has a two-year-old daughter, Amelia, who has disabilities. They live in a flat that’s got serious damp issues, and it’s affecting their health.
Nicole, just 22, has asthma, and the dampness is making it worse. She’s been in this flat for over four years, but the mould has gotten really bad lately. She’s tried to redecorate, but it feels pointless with the mould coming back.
Amelia, her daughter, is registered as disabled and has special needs. Recently, she even had a seizure, and Nicole worries that the dampness might be affecting her health too. It’s a tough situation for any parent.
Nicole has reached out to her housing provider, Cairn Housing, but feels like they’re not taking her seriously. They visited once but didn’t really help. She’s been told it’s her fault for not ventilating properly, but she’s doing everything she can.
When someone from the John O’Groat Journal visited, they saw that Nicole was trying hard to keep the flat warm and ventilated. But there’s still water dripping down the walls, and the moisture readings are way too high.
She’s feeling overwhelmed. “I’m pregnant, have asthma, and a daughter with additional needs,” she said. “It’s just getting worse, and I’m sick of it.” It’s frustrating when you feel like you’re not being heard, especially when it’s about your family’s health.
Nicole showed the reporter the damp areas, and it was clear that the situation is serious. A friend even tested the moisture levels and found them alarmingly high. It’s not just a minor issue; it needs urgent attention.
She mentioned that when her daughter had an accident with a heater, the housing provider was quick to respond. But now, with the dampness, it feels like they’re not taking it as seriously.
Local councillor Matthew Reiss is aware of the situation and is trying to help. He’s been in touch with the housing provider to find a solution. Meanwhile, Cairn Housing has said they take these issues seriously and are in contact with Nicole to help her out.
After the newspaper got involved, things started to move a bit faster. Nicole received a dehumidifier and some financial help for her electric bill. It seems like they’re finally starting to take action, which is a relief for her.
Nicole feels grateful for the support she’s received since the article was published. She’s hopeful that things will improve for her and Amelia soon.
