Derby: A charity called Quba, which aims to boost community sports and recreation, is in hot water. The Charity Commission has kicked off a formal investigation due to worries about possible misuse of funds.
Originally known as the Specialist Sports Foundation, Quba Charity started in January 2021. Its address has changed a couple of times, with the latest being in Luton.
The inquiry was sparked by links between Quba Charity and another charity, Quba Trust, which has faced its own issues. In December, the Charity Commission found misconduct at Quba Trust, leading to the disqualification of three trustees. Two of those trustees are also involved with Quba Charity, raising red flags about their influence.
The Commission noticed that Quba Charity and Quba Trust share similar branding and online content. For instance, Quba Charity’s website features projects that carry Quba Trust’s name and logo. Both charities have listed the same address in Luton in their reports.
The investigation aims to find out if Quba Charity has strayed from its mission. If it has, that could mean funds are being misused, which is a serious breach of trust.
To prevent any potential mishaps, the Commission has restricted the charity’s ability to transfer funds or assets outside the UK and has halted fundraising efforts. They’ve also asked current and former trustees to provide information for the inquiry.
The inquiry will look into how the trustees have acted and whether the charity’s funds have been used properly. If more issues come to light, the investigation could expand.
Once the inquiry wraps up, the Commission plans to publish a report detailing its findings and actions taken.
In their latest report, the trustees highlighted the importance of education, especially for kids in underserved communities. They pointed out that many children lack access to basic educational resources.
