Brixham: The demolition of the old St Kilda care home is moving along. Workers have stripped out asbestos and are removing the building.

They found more asbestos than expected, which delayed the process. The demolition was supposed to finish last weekend.

Demolition South West is handling the work carefully. Once the site is clear, groundworks will start in March for 23 flats aimed at social rent.

These new flats should be ready by Spring 2026. They will be available for people aged 55 and over, with priority for locals.

The project will replace the care home with attractive one and two-bedroom flats. It aims to help local households downsize, freeing up larger homes for families in need.

The new building will be three stories high, built sustainably, and will fit in with the local area. It will have communal spaces, lifts, and parking in a nicely landscaped setting.

Cllr Alan Tyerman from Torbay Council expressed excitement about the project. He appreciates everyone’s hard work and looks forward to seeing the new building rise.

Chris Herron from Classic Builders is proud to contribute to this local housing effort. Sam Irving from Torbay Council sees this as a significant step in providing social housing.

The former care home has been empty since it closed in 2016. The Council is working with Devon-based Taylor Lewis for project management.

Anyone interested in the new flats can apply through Devon Home Choice.
