Demolishing North London Symbol of Black Empowerment Sparks Controversy
Brent Council defends plans to rebuild a historic community center amid protests

Brent: The council in North London is facing some serious pushback over its plan to demolish a historic community center. They want to rebuild it as part of a big project that includes over a thousand new homes. The council leader insists that tearing it down doesn’t erase its history, but many locals disagree.
This center, known as Bridge Park, was opened back in 1988 by King Charles III when he was still Prince Charles. It was a huge deal, being the largest Black-led community enterprise in Europe until 1995. The place was created by the Harlesden People’s Community Council, which formed in the wake of the Brixton Riots. They turned an old bus garage into a hub for Black excellence and empowerment.
Now, Brent Council is teaming up with a developer to revamp Bridge Park and the surrounding area, which has been pretty run-down for years. They’re looking at a £600 million investment to bring in new homes, a leisure center, a hotel, and parks. Sounds ambitious, right?
But not everyone is on board. The Save Bridge Park campaign is gearing up to fight for the center’s recognition as a national heritage site. They believe it’s more than just bricks and mortar; it’s a vital part of Black British history. The council leader, Cllr Muhammed Butt, argues that the building is outdated and needs to go, but the campaigners think it can be refurbished instead.
Speaking to the BBC, Cllr Butt said rebuilding doesn’t mean losing history. He believes they can create new spaces that honor the original vision. But the campaigners are pushing back, saying the center represents a grassroots effort against inequality and should be preserved.
They’re planning to officially launch their campaign soon, and even actor Ray Fearon, known for his roles in Harry Potter and Coronation Street, is backing them. A consultation process is already underway, and a decision on the plans is expected later this year. It’s definitely a hot topic in the community!
