Didsbury: A tragic incident unfolded when a Deliveroo driver, Mustafa Sayed, hit an 86-year-old man named Sadrudin Noormaohamed Adatia. This happened while Sayed was trying to cut a corner to avoid traffic on November 14, 2022.
As Sayed approached the junction, the traffic lights changed. Mr. Adatia, using a walking aid, was crossing the road slowly. Unfortunately, Sayed turned right and struck him, sending the elderly man flying.
Despite being rushed to the hospital, Mr. Adatia sadly passed away the next morning. Sayed, who is 55 and from Withington, was found guilty of causing death by driving without due care.
During sentencing, Judge Alan Conrad KC noted that Sayed was under pressure to deliver food. He emphasized that Sayed’s focus on beating traffic led him to overlook the presence of pedestrians.
The prosecutor explained that both roads had a 30mph limit and were controlled by traffic lights. Mr. Adatia was crossing when the light was red, but he was already in the middle of the road when Sayed made the turn.
Sayed barely touched the brakes before the collision. He stayed at the scene until paramedics arrived, but he didn’t say much to the police afterward.
At the hearing, it was revealed that Mr. Adatia’s family chose not to make a victim impact statement, wanting to move on from the tragedy. Sayed’s lawyer described the incident as a profound tragedy that changed Sayed’s life.
In the end, Sayed received a suspended sentence of 10 months, along with community service and a driving ban for a year. He also has to pay court costs. It’s a heartbreaking situation for everyone involved.
