Delaware County: Big news! Leon Smith, a teacher from Haverford Township, just snagged the title of Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year for 2025. How cool is that?

He was recognized during a ceremony in Hershey, and it’s a big deal. Smith has been teaching for 22 years and is all about helping his students shine.

Angela Fitterer, the Interim Acting Secretary of Education, praised him for his dedication. She said he really embodies what it means to be a great teacher, making a real difference in his students’ lives.

Smith was one of 12 finalists, competing against some impressive educators. He teaches ninth-grade honors and AP social studies, plus African American studies for older students.

What’s really neat is that he goes beyond just teaching. He’s the African American cultural enrichment advisor and even coaches the freshmen boys’ basketball team. Talk about being involved!

He’s also a leader in his school, helping other teachers with professional development. Smith is passionate about culturally relevant teaching and supporting students from all backgrounds.

As the Teacher of the Year, he’ll be traveling around Pennsylvania, meeting other educators, and representing the state in the National Teacher of the Year competition next year. Exciting times ahead for him!
