Annapolis: The Anne Arundel County Democratic Central Committee just voted 10-9 to recommend Del. Shaneka Henson for the District 30 Senate seat. She beat out Del. Dana Jones for the spot.

Now, her name goes to Gov. Wes Moore for the final decision. This seat was previously held by Sarah Elfreth, who recently moved on to Congress.

Henson has been around since 2019 when she stepped in after the passing of House Speaker Michael Busch. She won a full term in 2022.

Before all this, she served as an alderwoman on the Annapolis City Council, representing Ward 6. Quite the journey, right?

However, it hasn’t all been smooth sailing. A recent ethics investigation found that Henson didn’t disclose a financial relationship with a child care center while approving state funding. It raised some eyebrows about a potential conflict of interest.

The investigation revealed she was the legal rep for Kingdom Kare, Inc., a nonprofit that was also paying her for legal services while she was involved in securing state funding.

On the positive side, Henson has been working hard for small businesses, pushing for tax exemptions and bonuses for school workers during the pandemic. She’s also focused on improving public housing.

If she gets the Senate seat, she’ll make history as the first Black woman to represent Anne Arundel County in the State Senate. That’s a big deal!

County Executive Steuart Pittman expressed his support, saying he looks forward to working with her and introducing her to new constituents.

In other news, the Anne Arundel County Republican Central Committee has recommended LaToya Nkongolo for the District 31 House seat, which was left vacant by Del. Rachel Munoz’s resignation.
