Bukoba: The World Health Organization is sounding the alarm about a possible outbreak of the Marburg Virus in Tanzania. Reports from the Kagera region indicate that the virus might be spreading, with nine suspected cases and eight deaths already confirmed.

Initially, six people were reported sick, and sadly, five of them passed away. They showed symptoms like headaches, high fevers, and even bleeding. It’s pretty serious stuff.

By January 11, the situation worsened, with nine suspected cases and a staggering 89% fatality rate. Health officials are on high alert, especially in the Biharamulo and Muleba districts, where they’re tracing contacts and monitoring healthcare workers.

This isn’t the first time Kagera has faced this virus. There was an outbreak back in March 2023, which lasted nearly two months. The area is home to fruit bats, which are known carriers of the virus.

To tackle this, rapid response teams have been deployed, and they’re ramping up surveillance and contact tracing. A mobile lab is set up in the region, and treatment units are being established to help those affected.

The risk is considered high, especially since healthcare workers are among those affected. The source of the outbreak is still a mystery, which adds to the concern.

With the virus reported in districts close to international borders, there’s a real worry about it spreading to neighboring countries like Rwanda and Uganda. The Kagera region is a busy transit hub, making it easier for the virus to travel.

So far, there’s no confirmed international spread, but the situation is being closely monitored. The region is well-connected, with transport links and an airport that could facilitate travel outside Tanzania.

Marburg virus spreads mainly through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected individuals, so health officials are urging everyone to stay vigilant.
