Deadly Disease Arrives in Aussie State, Sparking Health Alerts
A warning has been issued for those who visited Sydney’s inner-west after a tourist contracted measles following a trip to Vietnam

Sydney: A tourist recently brought measles to Sydney, and now health officials are sounding the alarm. This traveler had been in Vietnam, where there’s a measles outbreak.
Between December 11 and 16, the tourist visited several spots in Sydney’s inner-west. Now, anyone who was around during that time is being urged to keep an eye out for symptoms.
Dr. Leena Gupta from the Sydney Local Health District is particularly concerned. She mentioned that symptoms like fever, sore eyes, and cough could show up. A rash usually appears a few days later.
It can take up to 18 days for symptoms to kick in, so if you were in those areas, stay alert until January 3, 2025. If you feel unwell, it’s best to call your doctor first.
Dr. Gupta also reminded everyone to stay updated on their vaccinations, especially before traveling. The measles vaccine can still help if given soon after exposure.
She emphasized that anyone born after 1965 should have had two doses of the vaccine. NSW Health is encouraging everyone to check their vaccination status, especially with measles outbreaks happening worldwide.
The measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine is free for kids at 12 and 18 months, and for those in NSW who haven’t had two doses. If you’re unsure about your vaccination, getting an extra dose is safe.
People who visited specific locations during the tourist’s stay should monitor for symptoms, but there’s no ongoing risk at those sites.
So, if you were on Flight JQ62 from Ho Chi Minh City or at the Sydney Airport around that time, keep an eye on your health!
