Gateshead: So, there was this tragic incident involving a police car and a motorbike. Muriel Pinkney was riding as a passenger when the crash happened on Dunston Road.
The officer, PC Mark Roberts, who’s 56, was in court recently. He denied causing death by dangerous driving but admitted his driving led to Muriel’s death and her husband Ronald’s serious injuries.
Ronald, who was 77, ended up with some pretty severe injuries, including multiple fractures. This all went down near the Metrocentre on July 8, 2022, around 3 PM.
Now, the court’s saying they need to have a trial for the dangerous driving charges. It looks like it’ll be happening next year, with a provisional date set for May 11, 2026.
They might even move the trial to Teesside Crown Court, which could change the date too. The whole situation has been under investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct, and they wrapped that up in December 2023.
After that, they passed their findings to the Crown Prosecution Service, which decided to press charges. It’s a tough situation for everyone involved.
