Darlington: Paul Hodgson has put together a book that dives into the lives of 100 players who have really made a difference to him during his 50-plus years as a fan.
It all started back in the 1972/73 season when his mum took him to see his first game. They faced Southport at home and, well, it was a rough start with a 7-0 loss. But little Paul was hooked from that moment.
That day, he met his first Quakers hero, goalkeeper Phil Owers. Since then, he’s cheered on many more players, including the current stars like Jarrett Rivers and Will Hatfield.
What’s cool is that Paul didn’t just pick the top 100 players based on stats. He chose those who left a lasting impression on him, even if they only played a handful of games.
His book takes readers through the ups and downs of Darlington FC, from the tough times in the 70s to the better days in the 80s, all the way to the end of the 2022/23 season.
Some notable players featured include Dan Burn, who’s now a Newcastle star, and David Speedie, who made a name for himself at Chelsea after his time with the Quakers.
There’s also Jarrett Rivers, who had a unique journey from working in his family shop to playing for Darlington, showing how football can change lives.
And let’s not forget Kevan Smith, who played 245 games for Darlington before being part of Coventry City’s FA Cup-winning squad in 1987.
Then there’s Alan Walsh, the club’s record goal-scorer, who netted 100 goals before moving to Turkey and winning titles with Beşiktaş.
Exciting news! There’s a book signing event happening on February 20 at the Darlington FC Club Shop in the Dolphin Centre, starting at 10:30 am.
Several former players will be there, and everyone’s invited to join in the fun!
