Poyntzpass: It’s a tough time for the folks in Poyntzpass. Brian Magennis, a well-loved local man, has sadly passed away after battling pancreatic cancer.
He had fought hard and even beat the illness once, but it returned, and he left us peacefully on January 16, surrounded by his family.
In his early fifties, Brian was a devoted husband to Margaret and a proud dad to Daniel and Ben. He was also a loving son and brother, cherished by many.
Brian was deeply involved in the community, especially with the Redmond O’Hanlon GAA club, where he was known for his commitment and leadership.
The club shared heartfelt tributes, saying he left a huge void in their lives. Everyone who knew him felt his warmth and wisdom.
He was a man of faith, family, and friends, and his sister-in-law Sinead highlighted how everyone listened when he spoke, whether at Mass or during team talks.
Brian had a successful career in business, starting at Britvic and rising to Commercial Director at GM Marketing. His colleagues are heartbroken over his passing.
They remember him for his vision, kindness, and the lasting impact he made on everyone around him.
Brian was also a passionate GAA player, leading his team to victory in the Junior Championship in 1997. He was a true community man, involved in the Church and local schools.
He loved helping others, especially young people, and was a rock for his family, especially when Margaret lost her sister.
After recovering from his first battle with cancer, he jumped back into life, coaching and supporting his team with the same passion he had as a player.
Sadly, illness struck again, and despite his brave fight, he couldn’t overcome it this time. His legacy will be felt in the parish for years to come.
Brian’s remains will be at his home for family and friends to pay their respects before his funeral on Saturday at St. Joseph’s Church.
He will be deeply missed by his family and the entire community, who are all grieving this tremendous loss.
Family flowers only, with donations to the Southern Area Hospice if desired.
