New York City: The acquittal of Daniel Penny has stirred up a lot of emotions. Some folks see him as a hero, while others view him as a vigilante who took a life. It all started when Penny put Jordan Neely in a chokehold on an F train last year.

During the trial, the prosecution argued that Penny might have had good intentions at first, but he went too far by holding Neely in a chokehold for too long. Penny’s defense painted him as a good Samaritan trying to protect passengers from a man they felt was acting threateningly.

Mayor Adams weighed in, saying New Yorkers often feel the need to act in tough situations. He emphasized that the city needs to tackle its mental health crisis to prevent incidents like this from happening again.

After the jury found Penny not guilty of criminally negligent homicide, protests erupted outside the courthouse. Activists like Hawk Newsome expressed that the system has failed Neely and others like him.

Gwen Carr, mother of Eric Garner, shared her pain, saying the verdict reminded her of past injustices. Meanwhile, House Speaker Mike Johnson celebrated the verdict, calling Penny a hero.

Public Advocate Jumaane Williams criticized the decision, saying it sends a troubling message about accountability. He pointed fingers at politicians who supported Penny, including the mayor, for their comments that seemed to justify the chokehold.

City Council Speaker Diana Ayala called the verdict a “miscarriage of justice,” stressing the need for a fair trial. She acknowledged the fear that can come from encounters with those in mental health crises but insisted that Penny should have faced consequences for his actions.

Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani also condemned the verdict, calling for better mental health services and housing solutions to address the root causes of such tragedies.
