Woolwich: Daniel Khalife, a former British soldier, just got a hefty sentence. He’ll spend 14 years and three months behind bars for spying for Iran and escaping from prison.
This all started back in 2023 when he made headlines for breaking out of HMP Wandsworth. He was awaiting trial for serious spying charges when he pulled off that escape.
A jury found him guilty last November of breaching the Official Secrets Act. He was passing military info to Iranian handlers while still in the army.
Interestingly, he admitted to escaping during the trial, even though he initially denied it. He managed to slip away by hiding under a food delivery truck.
But he didn’t stay free for long. Just three days later, a detective caught him on a canal towpath. Talk about a close call!
In court, the judge didn’t hold back. Justice Cheema-Grubb called him “a dangerous fool” for his actions. She emphasized that he shared real military secrets with Iran.
He was also cleared of a bomb hoax charge, which is a relief. But overall, it’s a tough lesson for Khalife.
