Ontario: Winter is back with a bang! We’re in for some serious snow this January. While there aren’t any big storms brewing, the Arctic air is causing some intense lake-effect snow squalls.

This multi-day snow event is set to last through the weekend, and it’s got everyone on alert. Snow squall watches and warnings are popping up all over the snowbelt region. Expect heavy snow and strong winds, which could make driving really tough.

In the Greater Toronto Area, we might see some flurries, but they won’t compare to the 30-60 cm of snow that could pile up in the worst-hit areas.

Heads up! Another round of lake-effect snow is likely next week. Ski resorts are going to love this, as they’ll get plenty of fresh powder.

Before you hit the road, check those local weather alerts and highway conditions. You don’t want to get caught in a snowstorm!

Cold air from the Prairies is sweeping in, dropping temperatures and keeping the Great Lakes snow-free, which is fueling these squalls.

Snow squalls will be affecting major highways like 400 and 11, especially between Barrie and Orillia. We’re looking at possible snow accumulations of up to 60 cm!

Environment and Climate Change Canada warns that visibility could drop to near zero in heavy snow. Roads might become tricky to navigate, and closures could happen.

If you can, it’s best to delay any non-essential travel until things clear up.

On Friday morning, the squalls might shift south, giving a brief break in some areas, but don’t get too comfortable—more snow is on the way!

As we head into Friday night and Saturday, expect another wave of snow to hit the same spots. Wind gusts will be strong, reaching up to 60 km/h.

While the GTA might see some flurries, the real snow is happening elsewhere. The squalls should finally ease up by Sunday.

Looking ahead, a storm system we’ve been tracking won’t bring much snow to Ontario, but it will affect travel in the U.S. Midwest and beyond.

So, bundle up! It’s going to feel like winter for a while. Stay tuned for more updates from The Weather Network!
