Birmingham: A street in the city centre has been in the dark for over two years. It’s been a real concern for folks living and working around there. The stretch of Corporation Street, from The Square Peg pub to Old Square, has no street lighting at all.

Only the soft glow from the pub and nearby shops provides any light. Reiss Omari, a local who’s been pushing for lighting since 2022, thinks it’s just plain irresponsible. He shared a photo of the dark street on social media, expressing his frustration about the situation.

He pointed out that with buses now using the street in both directions, it’s just not safe. People are crossing between buses, and it could lead to serious accidents. He’s worried someone might get hurt or worse if this isn’t fixed soon.

Back in 2023, Birmingham City Council said they were looking into the issue, but here we are, 16 months later, and nothing has changed. However, there’s a glimmer of hope. The council recently mentioned that they’re working on getting the power supply back for the street lights.

They’ve been in touch with Transport for West Midlands, who are also on it. A spokesperson from TfWM said they’re collaborating with contractors and the National Grid to restore the lighting as quickly as possible. Fingers crossed, the street will soon be lit up again!
