The weekly sessions are designed to be therapeutic. They provide a safe space for participants to express themselves through dance. Thanks to funding from The National Lottery Community Fund, these sessions are held at The Croft in Malton and Next Steps in Pickering.
Michaela Bullivant, a dance-movement psychotherapist, leads the sessions. She works with the Haltemprice Movement & Dance Group Committee. Michaela emphasizes the importance of these sessions for adults who may struggle to access other movement opportunities.
Participants enjoy the comfort of familiar surroundings. Many have expressed how much they appreciate the chance to connect with friends while dancing. The project helps combat social isolation, especially during the colder months.
The age range of participants is impressive, from 20 to 89 years old. Lynne, a participant, shared her joy in wearing special costumes for celebrations. She loves the expressive movements and finds the body meditation at the end very relaxing.
Mark, another participant, enjoys the music and playing percussion instruments during the sessions. He finds the relaxing music at the end particularly enjoyable.
Leisa Burniston, the Next Steps Manager, praised the project. She noted the laughter and joy it brings to participants. The sessions have been a new experience, and everyone has embraced them wholeheartedly.
Sara Tharratt, the HMDG Committee Chair, expressed gratitude for the funding. She highlighted how the project meets individual needs in a fun and mindful way. It offers a creative approach to improving physical and emotional well-being.
