Dalmellington: So, the council just gave the thumbs up for a new shop on Main Street. It’s going to take over the space between 8 and 12 Main Street, which is pretty exciting!

The plan is to expand the current Keystore next door. They’ll have retail space on the ground floor and some storage and staff areas upstairs. Right now, that spot is looking a bit rough, but it used to be a storage area and a band practice hall.

They’re going to fix up the first floor and put in a new ground floor slab where the old garage used to be. It’s all about keeping the building in good shape for the future.

Plus, the front of the new shop will be made from reconstituted stone block to match the red sandstone of the shop next door. It’s nice to see some thought going into the look of the place!

This development aims to boost the retail scene in the area. The folks behind the project even chatted with the Ayrshire Roads Alliance, East Ayrshire Council, and Scottish Water, and they all said they were on board.

But not everyone is happy. Some locals raised concerns, saying it might bring more problems than benefits. They’re worried about property values dropping and want to keep the cobbled street intact.

Traffic is another big issue. One resident pointed out that a bigger shop means more traffic and parking problems on a narrow road that’s already crowded. Deliveries to the current store can be a hassle, especially with buses trying to get through.

Even with these worries, the planning officials at East Ayrshire Council approved the proposals this week. It’ll be interesting to see how this all plays out!
