Levenshulme: A tragic incident unfolded when a dad was killed in his home. Osagie Harrison Aimiyekagbon, known as Harry, was stabbed by Samuel Opokiti, a man he had repeatedly reported to the police.

Harry, a 36-year-old security officer, suffered around 50 stab wounds in what was described as a completely unprovoked attack. He had called the police multiple times about Opokiti’s threats, expressing concerns for his safety and that of his young son.

Despite Harry’s warnings, Opokiti remained in the shared house they lived in. It turned out he was struggling with schizophrenia at the time of the attack. He later pleaded guilty to manslaughter due to diminished responsibility and is expected to stay in a secure hospital for a long time.

During the court proceedings, Harry’s family shared how much he was loved and missed. They painted a picture of a caring and charming man whose loss has left a significant void in their lives.

On the day of the attack, Harry had called the police after Opokiti threatened his son. Later that evening, Opokiti armed himself with a knife and attacked Harry without warning. Despite Harry’s attempts to escape, he was brutally stabbed.

When the police arrived, Opokiti was found covered in blood and claimed Harry was in a bad state. Sadly, Harry’s injuries were too severe for any help to save him.

Opokiti was initially taken to the hospital for a hand injury but was later arrested. He has been in a secure hospital since, as his mental health continued to decline. He told doctors he felt controlled by demons that urged him to kill Harry.

Harry’s brother spoke in court, emphasizing how amazing Harry was and how deeply he was loved. The judge acknowledged that no sentence could bring Harry back or lessen the grief felt by his family.

An investigation into how the police handled Harry’s complaints is ongoing. The judge expressed hope that this inquiry would determine if earlier intervention could have prevented this tragedy.

Opokiti, originally from the Netherlands, had moved to the UK in 2019. He had a history of mental health issues but had been thought to be stable until this incident. The judge noted that Opokiti poses a significant risk to others if not properly treated.

After the hearing, a police official expressed hope that the sentencing would provide some closure for Harry’s family as they continue to cope with their loss.
