Corvallis: Over the weekend, a crane was used to remove a train that had derailed and ended up in the Marys River. This happened after a trestle collapsed back on January 4.

The train was carrying urea and agricultural fertilizers when it went into the river. Thankfully, crews acted quickly to contain any potential leaks, according to the railroad spokesperson.

The removal process was described as “slow, but measured,” and it wrapped up over the weekend. First, they vacuumed out the agricultural products from the train cars before lifting them out with the crane.

As for the investigation, it’s still ongoing to figure out what caused the trestle to collapse. Meanwhile, the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has been monitoring the situation closely.

They assured everyone that there’s no threat to public health. They even took water samples from both upstream and downstream to check for any contamination.

So far, the early results look good, showing no immediate risk to fish in the area. The DEQ is keeping an eye on things to ensure water quality remains safe.

Corvallis officials also mentioned that the city’s water intake is two miles upstream from the incident, so there’s no risk to the drinking water supply.
