Coventry: A shop was fined for a serious pest problem. 4 Ways Fine Foods on Walsgrave Road had a bad infestation of mice and cockroaches. This led to a temporary closure due to health risks.
Inspectors visited the shop in February 2024 for a surprise hygiene check. They found rotten fruits and vegetables, along with the pests. Coventry City Council reported these findings.
The shop operator, Mr. Diyar Kadar, agreed to close the business voluntarily. The pest issue was a serious health risk. After closing, they treated the pests and cleaned the shop.
Once the pests were gone, the shop reopened. A follow-up inspection in March showed no signs of mice or cockroaches. The cleaning standards were also maintained.
Mr. Kadar explained he tried to manage the pest problem but didn’t realize how bad it was. He had family issues that kept him away from the shop, as heard in Coventry Magistrates’ Court.
He pleaded guilty to not controlling pests, keeping the place clean, and protecting food from contamination. He was fined £3,280.
Councillor Abdul Salam Khan emphasized the importance of food safety in Coventry. He urged residents to report any hygiene issues they find in food businesses.
Davina Blackburn added that they prefer to work with businesses first. However, they will take action if health is at risk. Closing the shop was necessary to protect consumers.
