Bristol: A couple is really upset after losing their personalized number plate. They’ve had it for nearly 30 years, and it’s a tribute to their favorite football team, Bristol Rovers. The DVLA decided it was “potentially offensive,” which has left them fuming.
John and Jackie Cooke are huge fans of the Rovers and have proudly displayed the plate ‘N14 GAS’ since 1997. It stands for “Number one for the Gas,” a nod to the team’s nickname. They can’t believe that after all this time, the DVLA suddenly thinks it’s offensive.
Interestingly, the couple says the DVLA staff actually suggested the plate to them when they first got it. Now, nearly three decades later, they’ve received a letter saying it’s been flagged as potentially offensive, which is just baffling.
The letter from the DVLA arrived just before Christmas, stating that the plate could be seen as offensive. It’s a real kick in the teeth for the Cookes, especially since they’ve never had a complaint about it before.
Jackie is frustrated and wants to know why it’s considered offensive. She hasn’t heard back from the DVLA yet, and they were shocked to find out their plate was changed back to the original without any heads-up.
Now, they have to deal with the hassle of getting a new registration number and informing their insurance company. The DVLA did offer them a new plate valued at £250, the same price they paid back in 1997, but Jackie feels that’s not fair given the situation.
They were offered a temporary plate, ‘JJ64 GAS,’ but they’re really hoping to get their original back. Jackie even spoke with her local MP, who mentioned that the plate might be misinterpreted. It’s a tough spot for them, and they just want their cherished plate back.
