Durham: The County Durham Council is really excited about how its Inclusive Economic Strategy is making a difference. Launched back in December 2022, this plan is all about boosting the local economy and creating more job opportunities for everyone.
Councillor Elizabeth Scott is thrilled with the teamwork from councillors and staff. She mentioned at a recent meeting that they’re laying down solid foundations for a brighter economic future for all communities.
She pointed out that County Durham is in a much better spot now. The economy has grown by nearly £2 billion, more folks are finding work, and they’re closing the gap with the national average. It’s great to see the county getting noticed by investors and visitors alike.
Plus, the decision to join the North East Combined Authority devolution deal is opening up even more opportunities. Council Leader Amanda Hopgood emphasized that the progress shows the area is definitely not in decline, despite what some might say.
She said, “We’ve shown that with enthusiasm and collaboration, we can really turn things around.” Strategic business parks are booming, attracting new investors, with exciting developments like NETPark in Sedgefield and a new logistics park in Newton Aycliffe.
There’s also a lot happening in Bishop Auckland, with efforts to revitalize the town center and enhance visitor attractions. Liberal Democrat councillor Mark Wilkes praised the ruling coalition for steering the county toward success, highlighting the impressive growth of 8,000 new jobs.
