County Durham: The County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service is on the lookout for new on-call firefighters, and guess what? You don’t need any prior experience!

These on-call firefighters can come from all sorts of jobs—factory workers, cooks, farmers, you name it. They’re paid for their time and step up when emergencies arise.

In fact, over half of the firefighters in the service are on-call, juggling their regular jobs until they get that call to action. It’s pretty amazing how they switch from everyday life to saving lives in a heartbeat.

If you’re interested, you’ll need to live or work within five minutes of a fire station and be at least 17 years old. The best part? You’ll get top-notch training to prepare you for the role.

On-call firefighters are expected to commit to at least 40 hours a week and attend weekly drills to keep their skills sharp. It’s a big commitment, but it’s also super rewarding.

Kieran Hughes, a Watch Manager, shared that being a firefighter means tackling everything from fires to car accidents and even animal rescues. It’s a unique job that requires dedication and resilience.

He emphasized that on-call firefighters are vital to the service and come from diverse backgrounds, bringing valuable skills to the team. They’re looking for fresh recruits to help protect the community.

While you need to be close to a fire station, don’t worry about experience—first-class training is provided to get you ready for action.

The service is particularly in need of on-call firefighters at stations in Stanhope, Middleton-in-Teesdale, Barnard Castle, High Handenhold, Crook, Sedgefield, and Durham.

If you’re interested, you can find more details about the stations and their drill nights on their website. Applications are open now, so don’t miss out!
