Council’s brutal call on homeless Aussies

Moreton Bay: A local council has decided to take a hard line on homelessness. They’re banning people from sleeping in public spaces, including in their cars or with pets.

Mayor Peter Flannery pushed for these new rules after hearing complaints from residents. He mentioned that many folks felt unsafe due to the growing number of people camping out in public areas.

At a recent council meeting, he expressed frustration, saying, “This is unacceptable and I will not stand for it any longer.” It’s clear he’s feeling the pressure from the community.

Currently, there are about 4,500 people waiting for social housing in the area, while over 200 are sleeping rough. The mayor believes these new measures are necessary to support the frustrated residents.

Complaints have also been rising about drug use, excessive drinking, littering, and aggressive behavior linked to homelessness. The mayor noted that this has made some public spaces feel unsafe.

He’s proposing changes to local laws to stop people from keeping pets in public areas and using vehicles for camping. This means no more pets for those sleeping rough or living in their cars.

The council voted unanimously for these changes, which means vehicle owners will need to find caravan parks instead. It’s a big shift for the community.

Councillor Adam Hain backed the mayor’s actions, saying the community would likely support these prohibitions. He hinted at some troubling stories he’s witnessed recently.

Flannery also pointed out that the homelessness issue partly stems from the state government’s failure to tackle broader housing problems. He believes their lack of action has led to the current situation.

The City of Moreton Bay includes areas just north of Brisbane, like Caboolture and Redcliffe, and it’s clear that the council is trying to address a growing concern.
