Inverness: A seagull in the city center has raised concerns. Councillor Michael Gregson voted against a gull management program. He believes NatureScot holds all the power in this situation.

The gull management program may not run fully again this year. Egg and nest removal, a key part of the plan, is at risk. Four councillors, including Gregson, opposed these measures, while three supported them.

The city committee will vote on this matter today. Gregson sees the gull issue as serious. He acknowledges that gulls have been a nuisance. He emphasizes the need for an effective action plan but feels the council is at NatureScot’s mercy.

NatureScot’s new approach limits egg and nest removal licenses. They classify most gull behaviors as nuisances under the 1981 Town and Countryside Act. They recommend non-lethal measures to move gulls away from the city center.

Residents and businesses are concerned about the gull problem. Many locals have contacted the city committee about this issue. Gregson believes he is prioritizing effective measures by not supporting egg and nest removal.

NatureScot suggests various strategies, including using falcons and laser disturbances. They also recommend a “Do NOT Feed the Gulls” campaign and mapping gull populations with drones.

Gregson hopes this revised plan will improve the situation. It aims to reduce disturbances in the city center and save funds for the Common Good Fund. He believes these changes will positively impact the community.
