Derbyshire: So, here’s the scoop. A council in Derbyshire decided to crack down on littering, and they used CCTV to do it. They caught a couple of folks tossing their cigarette butts on the ground, and now they’re facing fines.

One incident happened on a footpath in Killamarsh. The council spotted the litterbug on camera and slapped them with a £100 fine. Pretty straightforward, right?

Then there’s this other guy, Christopher Barnes, who thought it was okay to toss his cigarette butt in a supermarket car park in Clay Cross. Two officers saw him do it while checking food hygiene. Talk about bad luck!

Barnes was given a chance to pay a £150 fine, which could drop to £100 if he paid quickly. But he didn’t pay up, so it went to court. In December 2024, he ended up with an £87 fine, plus some extra costs.

Steve Pickering, a council member, made it clear they’re serious about keeping the area clean. He said they won’t tolerate littering and are proud of their efforts to maintain a tidy district.
