Bath: The Bath & North East Somerset Council is getting some well-deserved praise for how it supports young people leaving care. Ofsted inspectors recently highlighted that these young folks are encouraged to chase their dreams.
During a two-day visit in December, the inspectors looked into how the council helps care leavers aged 18 to 25. They focused on the support provided to the most vulnerable individuals as they transition into adult life.
The inspectors noted that the council’s warm and caring culture is a real strength. They found that young people benefit from a stable leadership team and a dedicated workforce, allowing them to build lasting relationships with people who genuinely care.
Moreover, the council was recognized for its ambition for these young people. The inspectors mentioned that the children’s services team understands there’s always more to be done to help care leavers succeed.
According to the report, care leavers are supported by workers who advocate for them and help them achieve their best outcomes. Young people expressed feeling supported by their personal advisers, who listen to their needs.
Inspectors also found that former unaccompanied asylum-seeking children receive exceptional support for their mental health and unique needs, especially as they adjust to their new surroundings.
The report emphasized that personal advisers encourage young people to pursue their ambitions through education or work. They have a mentor who connects them with great opportunities.
Mandy Bishop, the council’s chief operating officer, expressed her happiness that the inspectors recognized their commitment to improving services for care-experienced young people. She noted that the team is aware of the ongoing work needed to support these individuals.
She added that the children’s social care team should be proud of the inspection results, which highlight the council’s mission to enhance lives.
