Council Update After Hooligans Graffiti War Memorial in Manchester

Sadly, this isn’t the first time the memorial has been targeted. It honors soldiers who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars. Thankfully, Manchester City Council has already cleaned up the graffiti and is working hard to track down those responsible.
Coun Pat Karney spoke out about the incident, saying it’s just unacceptable to disrespect a memorial dedicated to our heroes. He mentioned that the council was alerted right away and sent a clean-up crew to restore the memorial within hours.
Karney also emphasized that they’re continuing their investigation to make sure the people behind this awful act face justice. The graffiti was found under bronze plaques that honor the workers of J & N Philips and Co Ltd, who fought in the wars.
After the graffiti appeared, Karney described it as ‘shamefully disrespectful’ to those who fought for our freedom. He added that the council would check for any CCTV footage to help identify these hooligans. Interestingly, this memorial had graffiti on it back in 2022 too.
By the way, J & N Philips and Co Ltd was a textiles manufacturer that had its base in Manchester, where the Tib Street car park is now. They saved the plaques for a permanent memorial after the company closed in 1969.
Last November, the council announced plans to demolish the car park, inviting developers to propose a ‘world-class’ project. Council leader Bev Craig mentioned that the site had become a hotspot for anti-social behavior and didn’t fit in with the area anymore.
