Farnham: Jodie Sikkel, a Parkrun director and local resident, wants to start a run at Farnham Park. She thinks it’s the perfect spot for the event.
However, some locals are worried about traffic and parking issues. These concerns have made the process a bit tricky for Jodie.
The closest Parkrun is at Alice Holt Forest, about five miles away. This distance makes it hard for people who rely on public transport.
Jodie believes a Parkrun at Farnham Park would help people of all ages get outside, stay active, and meet others.
She previously set up a Parkrun in Henley-on-Thames. Jodie said she was surprised to find no Parkrun in Farnham Park.
She explained that once you find a suitable location, the setup is straightforward. It’s all about getting permission from the landowner.
Jodie noted that Parkruns help local businesses by bringing in customers for coffee and breakfast after the event.
Some residents are urging her to look for other locations due to parking concerns. However, Jodie pointed out that there are several parking options nearby.
She is taking community concerns seriously, especially regarding traffic and parking. Jodie wants to make sure everyone is happy with the new event.
Parkrun events are free, 5-kilometre runs held every Saturday, organized by volunteers. Since starting in London in 2004, there are now over 2,000 Parkruns in the UK.
Jodie estimates that in a year or two, the Farnham Park run could attract 300 to 400 participants due to its central location.
