Brisbane: Australian households are in for a tough time as grocery prices are set to rise significantly. On average, families will see an increase of about $1000 in their yearly grocery bills.

Research from Compare the Market shows that the average weekly grocery spend will jump to $213.64, up from $191.66 in 2024. That’s a hefty 11 percent increase in just one year!

Sarah Orr from Compare the Market pointed out that even small price hikes can really add up, especially for families trying to manage their budgets. She mentioned that it feels like every aisle in the supermarket is seeing price increases.

Everyday items like coffee and chocolate are getting pricier due to supply issues, making it hard for Aussies to dodge the financial pinch.

Interestingly, grocery spending habits vary across states. Queenslanders are expected to spend the most on groceries compared to other states.

Sky News host James Macpherson criticized Treasurer Jim Chalmers for urging Australians to stay optimistic about the future while they’re grappling with rising living costs. He felt there wasn’t much reason for that optimism.

According to the survey, the average Queenslander is now spending $38.17 more on groceries than last January, which is a staggering 22.3 percent increase, translating to nearly $2000 more annually.

Western Australia isn’t far behind, with grocery bills rising by about $36 year-on-year. Meanwhile, New South Wales and Victoria are experiencing the smallest increases, just under 9 percent each.

In NSW, families are still spending around $882 extra on groceries each year, while in Victoria, it’s slightly higher at $915.

Coles has reported some price drops on various items, which is a bit of good news. They noted that grocery inflation is currently at 1 percent compared to last year, with prices for dairy, meat, and other essentials falling.

A Coles spokesperson mentioned that they’re focused on helping customers find value through weekly specials and exclusive brands, especially as many are feeling the pinch of rising living costs.

Woolworths is also seeing a slight decrease in average grocery prices. They understand that families are feeling the strain and are working to help them stretch their grocery budgets.

Orr added that many Aussies are cutting back on dining out and takeaway meals, which means they’re cooking more at home. This shift leads to fuller trolleys and longer grocery bills.

She also noted that some financial relief has come from energy rebates and cheaper public transport in Queensland, allowing families to allocate more cash to essentials.
