The Corris Railway Society asked members for help to finance a new locomotive. Most members supported the idea of building a modern version of the Kerr Stuart “Tattoo” class locomotive.
The project began on February 1, 1995. Locomotive No. 7 entered service in 2005, bringing steam back to the Dulas Valley after 50 years.
This year marks 20 years of service for No. 7. It’s time for its second major overhaul since its boiler ticket expires at the end of the 2024 season. No. 7 has been a reliable locomotive, covering nearly 4,000 miles in the last decade.
Volunteers started the disassembly of No. 7 between Christmas and New Year 2024. They aim to have it ready for the 2025 Corris Railway gala on May 24.
They removed the saddle tank, cab, coal bunker, and other parts to work on the boiler and smoke box. The boiler will be re-tubed, and its metal will be inspected for safety certification.
After lifting the boiler, they will clean and repaint the frames. The Vale of Rheidol Railway will help fabricate a new stainless steel smokebox and re-profile the tyres.
The cancellation of the 2024 Santa Specials due to Storm Darragh caused a loss of revenue. This money is crucial for the railway’s operations.
Anyone wanting to help can donate through the railway’s website or send cheques to Corris Railway, Station Yard, Corris, Machynlleth SY20 9SH.
