York: The Cornish Bakery in Colliergate has been closed since a fire. Firefighters responded on the evening of January 29.
Mat Finch, the managing director, said no one was inside during the fire. Residents above the bakery were safely evacuated.
He expressed relief that there were no injuries. The fire was quickly controlled by North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.
The cause of the fire is still unknown. The bakery’s counter area seems mostly intact, but there is smoke damage on the ceiling.
The bakery plans a full refurbishment. Finch mentioned they are working with the fire brigade to assess the damage.
They aim to repair and reopen as soon as possible. Updates will be shared on their social media channels.
Finch thanked the emergency services and the local community for their support. This fire follows a previous incident in 2018 that closed the bakery for over four months.
