Melbourne: So, Abdul Nacer Benbrika, the convicted terrorist, is still under supervision for a bit longer. He just got out of prison last month after nearly 20 years for plotting some serious attacks.
When he was released, he had to follow a bunch of strict rules, like a curfew and police watching him closely. But now, the government decided to ease up on some of those restrictions.
The Attorney-General, Mark Dreyfus, went to court to keep an eye on him a little longer, and the judge agreed. They think it’s important for public safety, especially since Benbrika still has some extremist views.
His lawyer mentioned that while he’s not a direct threat right now, he’s still got some issues that could make him a risk. So, they’re keeping him in check with conditions like therapy and monitoring his internet use.
Benbrika’s legal team is okay with this month-long extension but plans to fight for a more permanent solution next year. The court will check in again on January 14 to see what’s next.
It’s a bit of a wild story, considering he was involved in plots against big places like the MCG during the AFL grand final. He’s been through a lot, but for now, he’s still under watch.
