Flintshire: So, there’s this amazing auction happening soon at Plas Teg, a mansion in Wales that’s known for being haunted. The owner, Cornelia Bayley, is selling off a ton of antiques, and it’s being called a “once in a generation” event. How cool is that?
All the items have been moved to a nearby warehouse, and auctioneers Rogers Jones are handling the sale. This Jacobean mansion, built way back in 1610, has a wild history. Cornelia bought it in 1985 when it was pretty much falling apart, but she saw its potential.
She’s a real history buff and loves antiques, so she dove right into restoring the place. It’s been through a lot, including being ransacked during the Civil War. Cornelia has made it a local gem, hosting events and working with Cadw to bring it back to life.
Last autumn, Richard Madley from Bargain Hunt checked out the mansion’s contents and was blown away. He said it was one of the most incredible experiences of his career. The mix of furnishings was just stunning, from marble throne chairs to fancy Regency furniture.
The auction will feature a wide range of items, including antique ceramics and some really unique pieces like a Victorian canopy bath. The first auction kicks off on January 21, and there will be more to follow. You can even view the items by appointment at the warehouse.
But it hasn’t been easy for Cornelia. After spending a fortune on renovations, she hit a financial wall and has been asking for help to keep the place going. She even started a GoFundMe for urgent repairs. It’s tough when you can’t even afford hot water!
In a recent interview, she mentioned that the house hasn’t been properly cleaned in years, and it’s just her and her cat now. It’s a real testament to her dedication, especially since she celebrated her 80th birthday last year. What a story!
