London: So, there’s some serious talk going on at City Hall. The Conservatives are pushing for a big inquiry into historic child sexual exploitation. They want to know if grooming gangs have been operating in London.
Lord Shaun Bailey, who used to run against Mayor Sadiq Khan, sent a letter saying there’s a good chance these gangs have been active in the city. He believes a City Hall inquiry could really dig deep, using resources from all over London.
In response, Sadiq’s office said they’re all about supporting victims of sexual assault. They pointed out that the last government didn’t follow through on important recommendations from a national inquiry into child abuse.
Bailey mentioned that over fifty areas have been flagged for systemic abuse by grooming gangs, and he’s worried London might be one of them. He noted that the recent Jay report only looked at six towns, none of which were in London, leaving a lot of questions unanswered.
It seems this whole issue has been highlighted by a GB News article, where a journalist found more than fifty towns and cities that have faced similar problems. They gathered info from court records and talked to victims to put together the list.
When asked for a comment, Sadiq’s spokesperson expressed concern for the young victims who’ve suffered at the hands of these gangs. They emphasized that supporting these victims is a top priority for both the mayor and the Met Police.
They also mentioned Operation Soteria, a program aimed at improving how the police handle serious sexual offenses. The mayor is keen on working with the new government to make sure kids are safe and victims get the justice they deserve.
