Lanchester: The Lanchester Community Orchard is all about bringing fresh food to the community. Thanks to the hard work of locals, it recently snagged the Environment Award.

This orchard, which started back in 2011, is a shining example of what a community can do when they come together for a good cause. It’s run by a passionate group of residents who really care about the environment.

With over 200 native fruit and nut trees, the orchard not only provides delicious fruit but also serves as a lovely green space for local wildlife.

In 2019, they kicked off a Forest Garden Project to boost biodiversity and create inviting natural spots for visitors. The community really got involved, adding cool features like a dry-stone wall seating area, a wildflower meadow, and woodchip pathways.

When they accepted the award, one member shared how it all began with a piece of land meant for the environment. They gathered a group, planted 60 trees, and then went on to plant 300 more the next year.

They wanted to create a space that was about more than just nature; it was about bringing people together in Lanchester.

Looking ahead, the members said, “We take care of it! We’ve boosted our environmental impact and have wildflower meadows. Plus, we pick and enjoy the fruits every year. It’s all about teamwork and that community spirit.”
