Ashtabula: Earlier this week, the Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Department and the local Crime Enforcement Agency shared some grant proposals with the commissioners. They’re looking to secure funding to keep the drug task force running smoothly.

Detective Brett Grabman was the one presenting. He talked about two grants they’re applying for. The first one is a hefty $188,000, which would help pay for a full-time investigator, a coordinator’s salary, a vehicle, and some necessary software.

He mentioned that the deadline for this grant is coming up fast on January 6. If they get it, the funding would kick in from May 1, 2025, to April 30, 2026.

Then there’s a second grant, which is more modest at around $10,000. This one would help buy some equipment and would be available from July 2025 to June 30, 2026.

On another note, the commissioners also approved a $43,472 grant aimed at helping senior citizens with transportation, courtesy of the Ohio Department of Aging. This will be a big help for the Ashtabula County Transportation System.

They also signed off on a contract for up to $10,200 with AI video intelligence for the Sheriff’s Department. Plus, they made some appointments, bringing Phil Cordova onto the Public Defender Commission and Martha Gillespie onto the Children Services Board.
