Edinburgh: Tony Slattery’s tragic death has left many in shock. An expert believes his long history with cocaine and alcohol might have played a role, even after years of sobriety.
The beloved comedian passed away on January 12, and his partner confirmed it was due to a heart attack. He was just 60 years old.
Slattery, known for his role on Channel 4’s Whose Line Is It Anyway?, had bravely opened up about his struggles with addiction. In a 2019 interview, he revealed he used to consume a staggering amount of cocaine and vodka daily.
Despite overcoming his addiction for several years, experts warn that the damage might have already been done. Ian Hamilton, a professor at the University of York, explained that cocaine and heavy drinking can have lasting effects on the heart.
He noted that while it’s great Slattery managed to stay clean, the toll on his body could have been significant. At his worst, he reportedly consumed around 50 units of alcohol a day, far exceeding the recommended limit.
In a heartbreaking final post on Christmas Day, Tony shared a message about having a “wonderful year” and wished everyone a “healthy, happy new year.”
Many have paid tribute to him, including Sir Stephen Fry, who expressed his sadness over the loss of such a gentle and talented soul. Fry reflected on how cruel it was that Tony was taken just as he was starting to find joy in his life again.
