Colchester: A zebra has sadly passed away at the zoo after a rare incident with a rhino. The zoo’s spokesperson mentioned that these occurrences are quite uncommon.

The incident happened around 14:00 GMT in the African habitat where the zebra and a rhino were. The zoo expressed their heartbreak over the loss and thanked everyone for their support during this tough time.

They’re also focusing on ensuring the other animals in the habitat are doing okay. One visitor shared on Facebook that they witnessed the rhinos and zebras running around as they were entering the zoo.

They were asked to leave without knowing what had happened, but praised the staff for their professionalism in handling the situation. The African habitat, which opened in 2001, is home to various animals, including giraffes and ostriches.

Colchester Zoo has been around since 1963 and just celebrated its 60th anniversary last year. It’s known for its conservation efforts, especially with the southern white rhinos, and has seen several calves born over the years.
