Mumbai: Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is on a mission to speed up the metro network in the Mumbai metropolitan region. He’s aiming for at least 50 kilometers of new metro lines every year starting in 2026. Sounds ambitious, right?
At a recent meeting with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), he laid out his plans. Fadnavis also kicked off a 100-day program for the Urban Development Department to get things moving. During his previous term, he really pushed for the metro projects, and while some are up and running, others have lagged behind.
He’s not looking for any delays moving forward. This year, he expects around 23 kilometers of new lines to start operating. Plus, there’s more to come with the Metro-3 project, which is partially underground and should add another 20-25 kilometers this year. After 2025, he wants to keep that 50-kilometer goal going strong.
Fadnavis also suggested some innovative ideas, like running metro trains without traditional car sheds. He mentioned some experiments where temporary parking arrangements were made for the trains. This could help save land for future lines, especially since the Metro-3 project faced delays due to land issues for its car shed.
On another note, he’s pushing for the completion of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar’s memorial at Indu Mills by the end of this year. He’s asked the MMRDA to prepare a maintenance plan for both the Ambedkar and Balasaheb Thackeray memorials.
