Mumbai: Tomorrow, CM Devendra Fadnavis will officially open the newly renovated Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum. This museum is located in Byculla, right next to the Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Botanical Garden and Zoo. The event kicks off at 11 am, and some notable guests will be there too, including minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha and a couple of local legislators.

The renovation work started back in March 2023 and wrapped up in just 18 months. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has put in a lot of effort, spending around Rs 2.8 crore on various improvements. They’ve done everything from waterproofing the roof to restoring intricate carvings and fixing up the windows.

This museum is one of the oldest in Mumbai, with its roots tracing back to the World Exhibition of 1851 in London. The building we see today was started in 1872, and it was originally named the Victoria and Albert Museum. It was renamed in 1975 to honor Dr Bhau Daji Lad, who was instrumental in its establishment.

Inside, you’ll find a mix of art, culture, and science. The museum showcases miniature sculptures, maps, and rare books, among other fascinating exhibits. It’s designed in six parts, with displays that highlight Mumbai’s rich history and artistic heritage.

In 2003, a partnership was formed to manage and revive the museum, leading to a major restoration that was completed in 2008. This project even earned a UNESCO Award for Excellence in Cultural Conservation.

Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum is all about promoting cultural education and social interaction. They host various exhibitions and activities that spark interest in art and history, especially among kids. Plus, they offer free entry to institutions promoting Indian handicrafts, showcasing their work in a special gallery.

The museum has collaborated with international institutions like the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Guggenheim in New York. They also run programs in Marathi to celebrate local traditions in art and culture, which have been really well received.

Additionally, they’ve launched internship programs for students and art teachers, giving them a chance to engage with visitors and create educational materials. It’s a vibrant place that’s constantly evolving and connecting with the community.
