Mumbai: So, it turns out that Cloudflare’s popular VPN app, 1.1.1.1, along with a bunch of others, has been yanked from the app stores in India. This move comes straight from the government, and it’s making waves in the tech community.
The Indian Ministry of Home Affairs issued orders to remove these apps, and it’s all about compliance with new regulations. Apparently, they think some of the content goes against Indian law, which is a big deal.
Other apps like Hide.me and PrivadoVPN are also caught up in this mess. Apple mentioned that they had to comply with a request from the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Center, which is part of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
It’s interesting to note that this is the first major action under India’s 2022 rules for VPNs. These rules require VPN providers to keep detailed records of their users for five years, which has raised eyebrows in the industry.
Big names like NordVPN and ExpressVPN are not too happy about these new requirements. Some of them are even thinking about pulling their servers out of India altogether, although they still offer services to Indian users.
For now, NordVPN, ExpressVPN, and SurfShark are still available, but they’ve stopped promoting their apps in India. It’s a tricky situation for everyone involved.
