Brisbane: So, Peter Dutton is really going after Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. He’s not happy about Albanese’s idea to switch to four-year fixed terms for federal elections.

On Channel 7’s Sunrise, Albanese suggested that Australia should adopt this system, like many states and territories already do. He kicked off his election campaign in Queensland, pushing for some big changes.

But Dutton wasn’t having it. He called Albanese’s proposal a “desperate play” from a PM who’s just trying to hold onto his job. He thinks it’s all about Albanese clinging to power.

Dutton challenged Albanese to be clear about his plans. He compared it to the Voice referendum, which didn’t go well. He believes the PM should focus on real issues, like the cost of living, instead of his own job security.

He pointed out that families are struggling and need a leader who cares about them, not one who’s just trying to stay in office longer. Dutton even suggested that if Albanese wants job security for politicians, he should just call an election and let the people decide.

Albanese, on the other hand, doubts the Coalition will support his idea, which would need a referendum to happen. He recalled how the Coalition has flip-flopped on similar issues in the past.

Right now, federal elections happen every three years, with the PM deciding when they take place. Albanese hasn’t set a date for this year’s election yet, but analysts are hinting at April 12.
