Worcester: A local guy named John Rowan has been keeping an eye on e-bike riders. He’s seen them run red lights and almost hit pedestrians. Recently, he claims one even set off a speed camera on Tybridge Street.
John walks his dog daily and says he notices these electric bikes and scooters zooming around without a care for anyone else. He’s been seeing this for a couple of years now since e-bikes became a big thing.
He shared a story about a close call he had. A cyclist cut him off, and when he honked, the rider responded with a rude gesture. It’s not just him; he sees e-bikes running red lights all the time. One time, he was shocked to see one go so fast that it triggered a speed camera.
A spokesperson from West Mercia Police explained that speed cameras can catch anything moving too fast, including cyclists. If they’re over the limit, the camera will pick it up.
John is worried about the dangers of e-bikes. He thinks they can reach scary speeds and fears someone might get seriously hurt or worse. He recalled a recent incident where a teenager on an e-scooter hit two pedestrians in a hit-and-run.
He’s frustrated that the police don’t seem to be doing much about it. In response, West Mercia Police acknowledged the issues with e-bikes and said they’re already checking in with riders in the city center to remind them of the rules.
They’re also putting up signs near popular spots to inform riders about their legal responsibilities. Plus, they’re working with Worcester City Council to tackle any anti-social behavior related to e-bikes.
While e-bikes are legal in the UK, there are strict rules. They can’t go faster than 15.5 mph, have to have a motor under 250 watts, and the pedals must be moving for the motor to kick in.
If anyone has concerns about e-bikes, they can report it online or call the police. They’ll take it seriously and handle it accordingly.
