Derby: The city is gearing up for some overnight resurfacing work on key streets. Starting January 20, they’ll be working on Victoria Street, Albert Street, and Corporation Street. This is all part of a bigger plan to make it easier for cyclists, bus riders, and pedestrians to get around.

The work will happen from 8 PM to 5 AM, so businesses and bus services can keep running smoothly during the day. They expect to wrap things up by February 11, which is a step closer to finishing the whole project by the end of March.

Once the resurfacing is done, they’ll be adding some new planters along the streets to make the area look greener and more inviting.

These improvements are part of ongoing efforts to boost active travel and sustainable transport in Derby. They want to make it easier for folks to move between the two Business Improvement Districts: St Peter’s Quarter and the Cathedral Quarter.

With wider paths, better cycleways, and more bike stands, it’s all about making travel safer and more comfortable. Plus, bus stops will have improved lighting, so passengers can wait in a safer spot.

Councillor Carmel Swan, who’s in charge of climate change and transport, is excited about the progress. She mentioned that the work around Victoria and Albert Street has already made the area look fresher. Once everything is done, visitors will find it easier to navigate the city sustainably.

She also pointed out that they have ambitious climate goals, and having the right infrastructure is key to encouraging greener travel options.

Originally, they planned to finish these works by February 2025, but delays from bad weather and a burst water main pushed things back. Now, the contractor is in the final stages and expects to complete everything by the end of March.

This project is funded by the Department for Transport’s Transforming Cities Fund. Derby and Nottingham city councils teamed up to secure £161 million to improve local transport and promote low-carbon journeys.
