Newport: A popular comic and gaming store, Sin City Comics, has made a big move from Friar’s Walk to the Kingsway Shopping Centre. The owner, Shane Jordan, is facing some heat for letting staff go during this transition.
Shane explained that the Friar’s Walk location had to shut down because of electricity issues. Unfortunately, this meant some staff had to be made redundant when the store closed in October.
Sin City Comics is a favorite spot for many, offering a wide range of comics, board games, and a gaming area where folks can even bring their own games. It’s a real hub for gamers in the area.
Now, Shane is busy moving everything to the new Kingsway site, hoping to open up soon. But when they announced the reopening, social media lit up with criticism, with some claiming they had ‘sacked’ staff. Shane clarified that wasn’t the case; they had to make some tough decisions.
He pointed out that closing the store right before the busy October half-term wouldn’t make sense for business. That’s usually a great time for sales, especially with Christmas around the corner.
Shane expressed his disappointment about having to close the Friar’s Walk store, saying he loved that location. He also took issue with some of the negative comments online.
“I closed eight weeks before Christmas, which is a crucial time for us. I didn’t shut one store just to open another,” he said. If he had planned to close, he would have done it sooner and kept more staff to help with the move.
“It just doesn’t add up. I’m opening a new store in January and February, which is typically the slowest time for retail,” he added.
